The sun may still be shining where you are (it still is here), but we have to face the facts… school has shown up, the cool fall air is creeping up on us & the germs will be coming for us! Being prepared the Natural way starts here
with the cool crisp air comes runny noses & maybe even a tickle in your throat, add some stress on top of the extra activities that everyone is starting & Yikes….
Stop it before it comes with my top back to school guide for stopping germs in their tracks:
Vitamins: 3 of the most important Vitamins for the winter~time in my opinion are Zinc, C & D. Upping your intake of Vitamin C now is a great way to get your body ready for the germs. Because Vitamin C is a water-soluble vitamin, we need to replenish our supply everyday.Times like these call for more than oranges. Take a solid supplement! Vitamin D is known as the SunShine Vitamin & thus should be taken through~out the winter months. We aren’t quite at winter yet, but it isn’t too late to start. Liquid (I find) is always better. Zinc is a must for helping prevent & rid infections. Lozengers are most readily available, but there are also supplements. Take these daily.
Garlic: Your sure to be making more soups & stews when the cooler weather hits. Not only are they easy to make, but the leftovers make epic lunches & it just makes everyone feel warm & cozy again! Just make sure to put plenty of Garlic in there! An excellent Anti bacterial, anti fungal & anti all that bad stuff! If you’re feeling up for it, try roasting garlic in the oven for an hour or so & slathering on your toast. (while you’re making that soup or stew, throw some morel, chantrelle or other hearty mushroom in. Mushrooms are way at the top of the list for helping fight infections & support immnity)
Adaptogens: So now you’re stressed. The sun is setting sooner, the kids have activities that make a sit down dinner impossible, homework, deadlines… it’s all catching up. You need an adaptogen that will help calm your nerves, relieve your tension & anxiety while making smiling thru it easier. Confianza is an incredible all natural stress relief that can be taken daily with no negative side effects, no risk of addiction & will help you sleep (can you say win~win)!
Probiotics: Keeping the good bacteria in high supply is key to keeping the bad bacteria from taking over. Taking a good over the counter probiotic like Dr.Ohhira’s is our family fav. Although you may find this a bit too pricey please keep in mind that it is the best of the best, & because of that, you can get away with taking one every 2nd day (or 1/2 every 2nd day for the kiddies). Eating some high quality raw sauerkraut, kefir, or miso daily will also do a great job of populating your gut with the good guys (look for brands that are in the refrigerator)!
Water: never underestimate the importance of water! Take your weight in pounds & divide it in half, make that number ounces & that is the minimum you should be drinking a day. Many peoples fatigue, over~eating, dis~ease & lack of concentration is magnified by dehydration. (I know that some people can’t handle the taste of water, but grabbing the crystal light or any of those other ‘sugary’ flavors is NOT in your best interest or your families! Instead, grab a healthy addition like ItWorks Greens, with 38 super foods & a slight orange or berry taste you can not only help you get your daily H20, but alkalize you, boost your immune, while sneaking in your veggies, fruits, probiotics & more! Safe even for kiddies, mine take it to school)!
Sleep: We all need our 7~9 hours of sleep a night to be regular functioning human beings. The nights come sooner & even the sun seems to sleep in, so why not take advantage of this by going to bed earlier. Without this time to relax & rejuvenate, our bodies can’t rest or heal. Make this a priority (after all, it’s dark out, what else are you going to do)?
Fresh Air: Although it may be harder (or more uncomfortable) to get fresh air now that it’s getting colder (I lived in Winnipeg, I know cold). But it’s so important! In fact, it’s one of our ‘basic needs’ . Just think of all that hot air that you are breathing in at home, the recycled air at work & the car heater blasting on your way to & from everywhere. This will contribute to your dehydration, dry skin & nose feeling irritated. A short brisk walk when the weather isn’t too brutal, a window open for 20 minutes to refresh your room. Anything will help. You’re nose will thank you.
So you’re drinking up, sleeping in, eating your raw sauerkraut & upping your supplements, but someone still caugh a bug. What do you do now? Check out my Top 10 Cold & Flu Helpers here.
