Vitamin D

Focus On Vitamins!

Vitamin “D”

What is it?

Vitamin D is a Fat Soluble Vitamin, which means that our Bodies need a supply of Healthy Fats in order for it to be absorbed properly (Coconut Oil, avocados, GrapeSeed Oil, etc). Vitamin D is both a hormone & a Vitamin.

How does it Help us & Why do we Need it?

Vitamin D is absolutly essential for the absorption of Calcium & the maintenance of its proper levels. This includes Teeth & Bones. It’s involved in the normal growth of cells, Cancer prevention (anticancer properties), immune system regulation ~ especially with white blood cells, & the regulation of blood sugar. It’s important for nerve transmissions & muscle contractions. It has more recently been called the ‘happy’ or ‘sunshine’ Vitamin, both are very appropriate!

What are the Best Vegan Sources?

The Best Vegan Sources of Vitamin D are: Fortified Vegan Dairy Sources, Sunshine :) , Dried Shiitake mushrooms, Fortified Orange Juice

*(remember, by eating enough foods with essential Vitamin & Minerals you can never over~dose)!

Signs of Deficiency:

Vitamin D deficiency signs include Calcium removal from bones & teeth, rickets (soft bones), bone pain, tooth decay, muscle weakness, arthritis, osteoporosis, cancer. For anyone living in an area with a decrease in the Suns Rays (during winter months) they are at risk for deficiency.

Signs of Toxicity:

Signs are unusual thirst, sore eyes, itchy skin, vomiting, diarrhea, calcium deposits in blood vessels & kidneys.

*take care, Most Supplements are D3 which are almost always made from Sheep Wool, Vegan Supplements will be D2 (& are just as efficiently absorbed)

Complementary & Incompatible Pairing’s:

Taking Anti~Convulsant drugs, or Mineral Oils can interfere with the Absorption of Vitamin D.

* a good rule of thumb for Vitamin D is to start taking it in October when you turn your clocks back, & stop taking it in March when you turn your clocks ahead*

Here’s to you being You.Naturally.
