The latest 5k (Night~time) Race with my favorite 8 year old

Usually when I wake up on Race~Day there’s an exciting energy in the house. The anticipation of getting your runners on & hearing the buzz of people, the vibe you get from all the awesome people around you stretching & ready to rock it. The runners high afterwards. Maybe today was different because the race was in the evening & not in the morning, But when my house woke up this morning the feeling in the house was closer to a pile of stinky poo instead of excitement or energy :(

Ahhh! Mornings.

After a bunch of grumpiness, half~hearted breakfasts & packing some water, sharkies (my sons go~to fuel), coconut water, socks, running gear, protein powder, etc….. we all took off to our respected ‘jobs (school & of course jobs). The weather reflected our mood. Cloudy with what looked like an evil eye ready to pour at any moment.

Energy I kept thinking. It’s all energy. It’s all connected. I need to turn this around. By 230 I was having some tea thinking only happy things doing my best to turn the day around. Was my son’s day getting better? I was hoping that I was strong enough to send my energy to him (I mean come on, the Island’s not that big!)

We had planned to beat our time in LadySmith from the Fall. 5km in 34 minutes, but all our ‘planned’ training sessions were postponed due to sore legs, rain, sleeping in, etc. I wasn’t worried tho, My Callym is an amazing runner & I knew he was going to push it to the limit!

The boys came out of school with their spirits a little higher, but I think the weather was still hampering our smiles! The threat of rain was still in the air, but we were determined to run this bad~boy today & I’m not sure anything was going to stop us!

Callym & I got our numbers, some ADIDAS tattoo’s & pens (that didn’t work) & headed off to stretch. We had time. Too much time I think. Callym was getting antsy!

We were in good spirits tho & were excited to RUN! (the rain stopped & the sky was clearing a little too!)

After some stretching & warming up we were off to the starting line. With a pocket full of Sharkies & a time to beat, we were pumped!

The race started & we were off! Callym’s been having a few issues with his legs. They hurt. He’s in the middle of a growth spurt & that’s part of the reason that our ‘training’ has been non~existant. But we were going to see what happened. Walking or taking a break can always be part of the plan!

The 1st km was a little tough. I think starting out always is. There was a hill too, so that always sucks! :)   Once we made it to the 2k sign I could tell that he wasn’t impressed. Does that happen to you too? You aren’t quite halfway & it seems like foreeeeeeeeeeever? But we kept pushing. Pushing each other, pushing ourselves. Callym was taking his Sharkies & pushing me. I was pulling him along at times & we were motivating each other. Before we hit the 3k sign we started seeing people on their way back! It was crazy. Young strong guys running their hearts out. It was great. I think I saw something in Callym’s eye, some kind of inspiration that tickled his mind. Made him think that it was possible to do. ;)

3k. That’s always the best sign, better then the 5k sign I think. It shows you that you’re more than 1/2 way & that you can totally do it! It almost seems easy now!  I could see it in Callym too. He popped that Sharkie in his mouth & sped up a bit. Mom, we’re at 18 minutes. I think we can beat our time. Yup, if we kept this pace we probably could. His guess was to finish in 29 minutes. We could do it. Callym wanted to make sure tho, so we pushed a bit more. We were on the home stretch now. Passing people & grunting. Pumping our arms & lettin’ er fly!

4k sign. And then the hill. THE hill. I hate hills. I’m pretty sure Callym hates hills too. Does anyone love them? Come on, be serious here! :)

But this was the home stretch. We were almost finished. In fact, you could hear people yelling. Up this horrid hill, around the corner & nearly there. Come on Callym, we can do it! (A kids just passed us. I’m not sure how, I think his parents drove him to this part because he had waaaay too much energy to be at the 4.5k part!). But we kept going. People were Cheering! Come on, you’re nearly there, keep going! I was yelling. Callym, come on! (he was behind me now & I was kind of worried that he was too tired to go on).

Never worry about Callym being too tired to go on.

Never.

Out from behind here comes Callym. Where the H*ll did he find the energy? Sharkies? The Cheering? Dunno, but he passed me. Surprised I took off after him, but it was too late :(

I tried, but I couldn’t catch him. Seriously, couldn’t catch him!

Yup, you saw it 29:28. He did it! He beat his time. He now has a personal best of 29:28!!!! He did it!!!

I’m so proud of my Callym. He’s such a strong person. A strong kid, strong athlete. He pushes & pushes & doesn’t give up. He makes you want to push harder & stronger & longer. And he has fun too! (running along road lines, jumping puddles & skipping while he pushes along). It makes me smile. It makes me so proud. I love you Callym & I feel so so lucky to have this special bond with you. We run together. We push each other. It’s our special thing, running these races together. I will never ever EVER forget these times!

So, happy & sweaty now we headed over to the Pizza place for supper (It was after all past our dinner time, & we were STARVING!!!!!) We caught the last ferry & fell asleep even before our heads hit the pillows!

Callym now wants to beat his time. He wants 27 minutes. We’ll need to train, but I’m so excited for his next goal!

Week 4 of my 1/2 Marathon Training

WhaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaT?

It’s been 4 weeks since I signed up for the Marathon? That just hit me. I still have 11 weeks to go, but man~ it’s coming up :)

I’ve made myself another schedule. I’m the kind of person who needs lists (lists of lists even). I’m also the kind of person who needs to update & refresh my lists often enough to not get bored.

So, without further a~due….My New 9 Day Work~Out Schedule! (why 9 day?~ dunno)

1~ Long Steady Run 1~2 hr

2~ 2o min of Arms & 20 min of Hill Running

3~ 30 min Run w/ a Pace of 5~6min/km

4~ REST

5~ Spurt Running & 20 min Arms

6~ Long Steady Run 1~2 hr

7~ 20 min Arms & 20 min Abs

8~ 30 min Run w/ pace of 5~6 min/km

9~ REST

Obviously I will switch days if something comes up (sore legs, slept in ;) ) But hopefully I can keep this up for April. May will have to be a different story!

Also have a Cool New Spring Jump Start Eating Fix, it’s only  3~7 days but I hope to have all the kinks smoothed out for you to try at the End of April, Early May, & then it’s, off & ‘running’ with a much cleaner, leaner way of eating.

As many of you know, we have been a nearly Vegan family for nearly a year now.

It’s been a great growing experience for all 4 of us. But we have recently made another big step towards the Vegan way of living by cutting out products that have eggs in them. We haven’t purchased eggs in many many many months, but we were still buying muffins, cookies & breads from the local bakeries that more than likely were made with eggs. This decision was unanimous, & I’m so excited for us. It can only mean greater & greater things! :)

Ok, so on to how I did this week………………………………

Tuesday

Started my 9 week schedule with #2. 20 minutes of Arms & 20 minutes of Hill Running. The arms weren’t a problem~ but the hills…. oh the hills. My goal was to Sprint up 10 times with a max of 12 if I could do it. I made it 8 times & felt weak in the knees. If I didn’t have an important business call soon after I probably would have rested & tried for the last 2~4. But I didn’t :(

Wednesday

I only ran today which was really weird. I usually try to work~out some part of my bod & run. Oh well, times are a changin’ eh!! I ran a little less than 5k, but my pace was faster with a 5.4. I was happy!

Thursday

Rest day. This was even more strange. I did my daily 200 jumping jacks, but took the rest that I told myself I would. I’m not sure if I like this ‘schedule’ thing, I really felt like working out……

Friday

I was supposed to do a nice spurt run today, but we were headed out-of-town today & I just didn’t get up before 7 to have had it done in time. It sucked because we spent a lot of time in the car & the run would have done me good. The least I should have done was Burpees (like these on our long trip to Tofino), but I didn’t even get that done :(

Saturday

Today was my nice long run day…… But it was also the first day of the Salt Spring Market, & my kids were selling some home~made products, so we had to get there early, & again I didn’t get up before 7 to have had it done in time. I was truly feeling lazy & horrid about it, so when we got home at 4 I took off & did a nice long run. I forgot my water bottle (if I had brought it, I think I would have run even farther!). But at any rate I did keep a pace of 6.36. Not too bad. I still have time to improve :)

Sunday

Easter! I woke up & stuffed my face with Chocolates (who didn’t right???) Then we did a small, short but super fun Family Run. I think we may have done 3~4 km. But it was fun, so that’s what matters….. It was an abs & arm day, but I’ll do that tomorrow seeing as I have a day off. I’m looking forward to really sweating, so I hope to do that plus a run! We also added a last minute family bike ride. It was a great 5k ride in the setting sun :)
