& Race Day Came!

Saturday night finally came, (the night before my FIRST EVER 10K) & I was filled with Running thoughts in my Brain (haha, pun intended), Butterflies in my Stomach (excited ones not nervous ones), Visions of an under 60 minute finish with my kids & hubby cheering me on, as well as a seriously horrid case of Sciatica in both legs. 😦 (the Sciatica hit me on Friday with a crazy vengeance & I had resorted to taking a few Advil’s a day to keep from crying my eyes out & ripping my legs off πŸ˜‰ )

Anyways. Onto Race Day!

We were going to wake up early (early for a Sunday) & make the 8am Ferry over to the Mainland, ease our way North to Parksville & stop in LadySmith for the best in the world Cinnamon Buns. But…. as it turned out there was no 8am ferry on Sundays! (there was a 9am ferry ~making us late for the start of the race, or a 7am ferry ~making us wake up extremely early). We had to wake up extra early (6am, Seriously???) Oh, & the Ladysmith Bakery was closed on Sunday…. Whaaaat??? My kids were not impressed!

But they were still SO supportive of me doing this & being able to be there to cheer me on! So 6am came & we all woke up with near the excitement of Christmas Morning (maybe that was just me?). Actually, little Ozzie was up before 6 with a big proud smile on πŸ™‚ Love my Boys!!

We all piled into the car & made it safely across to the Big Island.

The drive up was uneventful, the boys played their iPod & DS & I think I was in & out of a strange kind of high, still sleepy but so excited…. is there such a land? We made it to Nanaimo & stopped by Starbuck’s. (It’s a weird guilty pleasure). We had a small very un~healthy breakfast & I had a latte. A latte? Wtf? So weird!!

haha! (that little cup was a sample of their ‘blonde’ roast that we wanted to try). Having to take such an early Ferry gave us a lot (A LOT) of time to just hang out & chill.

Once we got to Parksville the boys dropped me off to get ready & they headed back a few blocks to check out a Car Show. Oh boys :)!! I still had over an hour to wait, so I headed to the Beach to sit & Meditate a little. It was a gorgeous day & so peaceful there. A great way to start Race Day.

Once I got my bib & changed into some shorts, it was time. The boys walked me to the Start/Finish line & had such big proud smiles even before I started! They were saying how much they loved me, how proud they were, & that they knew that I was going to ‘win’. πŸ™‚ (again, love my boys, all 3 of them *especially the one hiding behind the camera!).

I have to add, I was worried about my Sciatica acting up during the run, I had brought some Advil with me just in case, but after having that Coffee at Starbuck’s it didn’t seem to be bothering me πŸ™‚ Was coffee the Majikal answer?

I’m pretty sure I was all smiles too. I still wasn’t nervous, I was just waiting to have a ton of fun! That was my #1 goal, number 2 goal was to finish in under an hour. I’ve been running 8.5k on Salt Spring & was coming in around 56 minutes, but I knew the Messed~Up Crazy hills were slowing me down. I was confident πŸ˜‰

Count down. T minus 1 minute.

Ready?

GO!

Once we got settled into a few groups, I saw a girl with a Green shirt that seemed to have a great pace. I thought I would try to keep up with her. It was comfortable enough & I was happy. I wanted to stay between 5.2 & 5.6 minutes per km. Around the same time another girl with Bright Pink Shorts came around that seemed to have the same pace as me. I had to options now. Back & forth we went, all the while I’m sure I had a dorky smile πŸ™‚ haha!

I had heard a rumor that there was a hill near the beginning of the course. I saw it coming, but it was nothing like the Hills I was use to. I did fine! But just around that time I lost Pink shorts behind me & noticed that Green Shirt had taken off. I was on my own. No matter. The lovely lady on my MapMyRUN app was telling me that my desired pace was going fine. 1km. 2km. 3km. 4km. 5km. (I took my Vega Gel Pack).

When running at home, I usually stop by now for a little walk. I wanted to rest for a moment, but I didn’t want to get ‘stuck’ walking. 30 seconds seemed reasonable. I walked as fast as I could for half a minute. Took another gulp of my Vega Drink & took off again. I seemed to have more energy. Love! (I did this 30sec walk 3 or 4 times during the race & think I love it)

6km. 7km. 7.5km. 8km. 8.5km. This is now the longest I’ve EVER run. EVER. In my LIFE! I was beaming. (I was also HOT, the sun was out in full force & there was nearly no shade to be found)

By this time I had a crazy ‘runners high’ & was not listening to the MapMyRUN lady, & could barely hear Adele blaring what was now Running in the Deep. I had no idea how far I had yet to go. After the 8km point we had turned around & were on the same street just going the other way. I was pretty sure that there was just 1km left. That excited me so much that I started to sprint. Not sprint sprint, but I sure picked up the pace. I thought running faster for the last km would be fine. I had the energy still πŸ˜‰ . I ran & ran & ran. It felt great to push it, I was feeling it. It was hard, I was hot.

Then I saw it.

There it was.

……………………

The 9km sign.

😦

I think I actually screeched my runners a bit. haha. Sure I slowed down a bit, but I didn’t stop.

I was out of water. I was hot. I knew it was almost over. I wanted to see my boys. For a split second I thought of texting Chris to tell him I was almost there.

Then I really saw it. The finish line. I was there! This time I really started to sprint, but by then my legs were pretty done so my sprint was kind of pathetic πŸ™‚

I did it!!!!

Goals:
#1~ have fun

CHECK

#2~ finish under 1 hour

CHECK

My kids were so proud of me! Callym even said he’d like to run a 10k with me next time! Gosh that little man makes me wanna push myself more & more each & every day!

After a cool down we had a little bite to eat. I had some Vega Restore Drink & small Bar, some Oranges & Snap Peas. I did not feel hungry. What I really wanted was the Vega Restore Smoothie (but I forgot to pick one up). We waited around for a while to see the times. I came forth in my age group, something to strive for next time for sure! We even watched some of the presentations afterwards, but I think we waited too long. I was starting to get hungry, & going from hot to chilled & back again wasn’t too fun either. We finally left & I picked up some Vega. YUM.

I need to add again, after the Run I was kind of waiting for the Sciatica to kick in again. To my Wonder & Amazement, it didn’t. Was it the Coffee? Had I run the Sciatica right outta my legs? I don’t know, but I am so SO grateful that it’s gone πŸ™‚

Being on the Big Island was a treat for us, so we hit the Mall, the boys had some Toys R Us cash & I wanted to see if Winners had Chia & Flax on sale πŸ™‚ . I was still feeling pretty fuzzy in the head & maybe a bit nauseous. 😦 Boo, Where was that runners high I had earlier?

It was now around 3pm. The race had finished 2 hours ago & the boys were getting hungry! We hit a place called Delicado’s in Nanaimo. It’s the BOMB for Mexican. I ordered my usual Spinach Burrito, but really felt like sleeping instead. I felt like I just couldn’t eat. It was at this time that I noticed Sukhi Muker’s status on FaceBook about getting 2 pizza’s after his Ironman. Hmmm, I thought. Maybe I should eat something substantial? So I took a bite. I could always bring it home if it really wasn’t what I needed. (thank you Sukhi!!)

Oh Dear Buddha……. This Burrito was making me feel AMAZING!!! Every Bite I took was filled with Energy & Love! I should have ordered two πŸ™‚ That was it, that was the problem. My body was slowly shutting down after all that heat & exhurtion because I wasn’t feeding it anything! duh! So I finished up & felt great. In fact, before we left town we stopped & got some SuperGreen Salad & Pasta Salad for me too. (A good lesson to remember for me here: Even though I had all the Vega Prepare, Sustain & Recover stuff, Eating Real Food to Help your Body Recover is way beyond anything else you can do!) Here you can see how Hungry I truly was, I took a bite of the plate πŸ˜‰

The rest of our trip was pretty un~eventful. We stopped by our old stomping grounds in SaltAir. The tide was low & the boys wanted to find some baby crabs.

We made it home & relaxed & cleaned up. I had a small glass of wine to celebrate & took some time to think about this 1/2 that I’m signed up for in June. I was really having second thoughts about it. 10k is great. It’s long enough to push but short enough to still be a lot of fun. 1/2 a Marathon is far. I mean A LOT further then 10, that’s for sure. I was thinking that I would switch my registration from the 1/2 to a 10. But after checking out the site I found out that my only options are a 5k or a 1/2……….

So I have to start practicing running further. But still having fun. I will do the 1/2, & I will finish it, but I will have fun. That is still my number 1 goal. FUN. (& this time I won’t wait so long to chow down on that Burrito!)

What have you learnt in your Runs that you can share with us newbies? Did you Relax or ‘Go Hard’ this weekend?

Things you need to read!

Hi everyone! Are you so excited for the weekend? I love that it’s Friday!!! My boys have been on Spring Break for the last week & I’m pumped to be able to hang out with them for a few days.

Instead of a Review this Friday, I thought I would share some of the Amazing Posts that I read in the last few weeks. These are totally worth it. So grab yourself a cup or Tea or Coffee (or Wine, depending on what time zone you’re in) & enjoy!

This post (zero waste home tips) made me think really hard about how we Use & ReUse things in our house as well as the amount we Waste (both Food & Money). We take pride in ReUsing our bottles for Bulk Items & Composting regularly, but I now feel that there are so many more options out there for us to do. It opened my eyes to how wasteful some things are, & gave me great ideas on how to change it. I’m looking forward to saving money & the planet a little bit more now! I especially love the way they have added a 4th R (Refuse!) & remind us that it is Firstly Reduce, Then ReUse, and Lastly Recycle!

Conscious Diva’s had a nice article that also made me think. The article about The Grass is Always Greener really made me appreciate my life & helped me remember that it really is in the way you look at it, & sometimes you just need to take a step back to see where you really are.

Everyone has Money Issues right? I don’t care who you are, there is something about money that makes people a bit crazy. This article has 5 cute tips on how to be more spiritual with the moolah issues. It’s not a long post, but it is cute!

Oh She Glows is a Blog I go to regularly for Amazing Recipes. Angela is coming out with a cookbook soon & I am dying to buy it!!! (or get it as a present, whatever…;) ) Here is a recipe for Freezer Fudge that made me drool, what do you think of it?

Mung Beans are what Bean Sprouts are made of. Did you know that? Here’s a recipe for Mung Beans & Root Veggies that is Perfect for the days that are still a little too chilly for Salads πŸ™‚

Lauren over at the Holy Kale had a great article about keeping your Produce fresh longer (something I think everyone should know tips for). My only add~on would be to keep your Onions with your Apples as they keep each other from going bad (cool hey~ did you know that tip?)

Jess over at Wellness Warrior has a great 4 part video interview series with James Colqhoun from Food Matters (as well as the new film coming out March 21st Hungry for Change). Take a look at all 4 parts here #1 #2 #3 #4. There is so much info here that I just can’t get into it all. James talks about what his rules are for living a better life, how is he thankful, foods role, & so much more….. Chris & I just watched Food Matters,Β  (it’s free on YouTube) & it’s a great eye~opener. It made me much more confident to be in the field that I’m striving in (Nutrition, Fitness, Stress Management & Detoxing) & totally made me feel like eating Plants (not Animals) & taking our Supplements was A~OK!

Vienda is my new fav Guru. Here you will find Week One of her ‘uncover your authentic self’ & here you will find Week Two & Week Three (I’m still on week 2), hey~ let’s do this together!!!

Now, if you have the time & like reading things that are a bit more ‘deep’ or out there, Wake Up World always has some great posts that really make you think. Here are just a few of my favorites in the last few weeks….

Melt in your Mouth Valentines Chocolates

Here is goes…….

I’ve battled back & forth in my head about sharing this recipe with you all or making billions of dollars on it πŸ˜‰ I’ve decided that sharing it with you, all my loyal readers, is totally the best way to go!

I love this recipe for a few reasons.

#1~ it’s totally simple. The ingredients are few & the actual way to make it is easy~peasy!

#2~ the ingredients are completely healthy! Whaaaat? Healthy Chocolate? YUP!

#3~ you can personalize it to your hearts content!

Okay. Deep Breathe. Here is goes!!!

(pls note: I’ve had to make small changes due to the fact that our stove/oven is BROKEN!!!!)

Get your ingredients ready!

1/3 Cup Coconut Oil

1/2 Cup Choice of Chocolate

Mix & Melt together

I usually do this on the stove, but today I had to use our mini~oven (pretty inventive right?) I had to keep an extra close eye on it, I really dis~like the taste of burnt chocolate. When it’s nice & melted you need to add in some

1/2 Cup Maple Syrup!

(aprox, depending on if you’ve used sweetened Chocolate or not~ I use unsweetened, so adjust to your tastes)

While this is all melting & mixing keep your fingers out of the pot taste~testing by getting your mini cupcake holders ready. Plain, with treats, it doesn’t matter~ they’re all good!!!

Coffee?

Hazelnuts?

Cayenne Pepper?

Candies?

Currants or Dried Fruits?

Anything your Heart desires! Why not add a small scoop of Peanut Butter, Candy Canes… the list can go on & on!

Once you have filled your mini~cupcake liners to 3/4 full, throw these sweet~hearts in the Fridge. Let them cool at least 25-30 minutes before you pop them in your mouth & let then melt!

If serving them, leave them refrigerated until ready to eat, these babies will start thawing soon, so don’t keep them out too long. If you’re taking them somewhere, make sure they get put in a cooler or something! If all else fails & they start melting, eat up!!

πŸ™‚

Does your Valentines day include Chocolate? What’s your favorite kind?

Happy Pills!

So, as many of you know I received my diplomas in Stress Management & Relaxation Therapy a while back. I love having all this knowledge that is so applicable in todays times. Being able to help so many people with such a prevalent issue in a Natural way is amazing. I still remember reading through all my assignments thinking ‘gosh how true’ or ‘don’t I know it’ & ‘I know 20 people like that’ & even ‘yup that’s me’. It was both enlightening & a handy wake up call. This was EVERYONE. I mean, come on, who knows someone who isn’t stress out, anxious, depressed, bored, uptight, behind on deadlines, grumpy, tired, overweight…. (yup they’re all related)…. People are always rushing around & stressed out to the max, & all of that rushing & stress can develop into Anxiety & Depression. I (just like the rest of you), have dealt with it for a long time, tried all the new fads, alternative treatments, & gotten even more Anxious & Depressed when something hasn’t worked the way I was hoping.

True to my saying that everyone is stressed, anxious, depressed or a bit of it all, Here is a new Chapter on my issues & how I’m dealing with them in a Natural & Safe way. This post is both a Review of a product that I’m using right now, as well as a link to a few posts I wrote about on Stress & Depression. The following posts Stress Part 1, Stress Part 2, & Stress Part 3 are where you can find some helpful info on dealing with & reducing stress. I hope you find some helpful information there.

As for the Product Review, here it is!

VEEVA

I found this at the store just before Christmas time. When I walked by the display, the pharmacist asked if I wanted to take some samples home to try. Um, Hello!!! After checking out the ingredients (Lemon Balm, Ashwagandha, Rhodiola, L-Theanine, Choline, 5-HTP, Black Pepper, AllSpice, Cloves & Cinnamon) I knew it couldn’t hurt! These were all well~known ingredients that could help with Anxiety & Depression.

I asked the pharmacists if he had tried it (personal recommendations go a long way). He told me he had & it worked like a charm. A charm eh? I guess I looked a little skeptical because he came right back & said that it in fact would work within 20 minutes for him…….. My brain made a little screeeeching sound. 20 minutes? That was too good to be true. But I took a handful of the little pills, put them in my pocket & went on my way.

(*as some of you may know, my family & I are in the middle of a huge life changing move (nearly 3 months now). We have to date travelled 1/2 way across Canada in search of a new home & life. While this is VERY exciting, it is also trying & down right exhausting. Our 2 boys are still not in school due to the fact that we don’t know where we want to settle, & the places we are staying in are small. Travelling all the time & all the unknowns can make any one a little short of poise, good humour & well, down right Nippy. Add to that being away from all of our family (besides the 4 of us) during the Holidays, well let’s just say I wanted to try these pills)

When I got home I decided that I needed to try them as soon as possible. It was 5pm, the box said to take one first thing in theΒ  morning & last thing at night. I took one anyways. I don’t know if it was 20 minutes or not, but it was pretty soon afterwards that I did feel something. I’m not going to say that a big dark cloud lifted & I could see the sun ( I wasn’t that far gone) ~ but I didn’t notice something.

The next morning was another big travel day for us, so I took a pill before I even turned my alarm off. Once on the road (an hour or two after taking the ‘happy pill’) I mentioned to my hubby that it felt like little bubbles were popping in my head. And every time one popped I felt a little clearer & calmer. I’ve never felt that before.

I’ve been taking these ‘happy pills’ since just before Christmas & I have to say that these are the one & only pills that I have found to truly work wonders! I’m only taking one a day (first thing in the morning), but I think that for my situation it’s enough. But I would recommend anyone feeling low to consider these!
